News: NZ cities among most affordable

Tue, 19 Jun 07

Two of New Zealand's biggest cities are also two of the most affordable in the world...

Auckland and Wellington have been ranked in a global survey of living standards and they've come out far ahead of some more fashionable rivals.

Lindsay Horne has just become a New Zealand resident, escaping the London rat race for godzone.

"I really feel like the money I was earning over in the UK, I came across and pretty much had an equivalent over here, and I definitely get more bang for my buck really," she says.

London's the second most costly city in the world to live in. Auckland at 99 and Wellington at 111 are enticing Brits to New Zealand.

Everyday things cheaper in NZ

The cost of living survey looks at things like the price of food, heathcare and transport in 143 countries. The Russian capital is where you will pay the premium, ranked the most expensive city in the world.

A burger in Moscow stacks up against other cities but other basics there are astronomical.

In the world's most priciest city, it will cost you around $16 to buy a newspaper and cup of coffee.

It's the half that price in Tokyo and in NZ, a snip at around $6.

The rising cost of petrol is having an impact on America's cost of living. The city that never sleeps, New York, the highest at number 15.

Sydney is the most expensive city in Australasia, another reason why Horne says she's in New Zealand to stay.
