News: Landlord pays out £980 compensation over condition of flat

Mon, 21 Jun 21

A landlord in Norwich has paid almost £1,000 in compensation following the discovery of black mould and damp in a property last September.

Because of an apparent dispute with a lettings agency the problem was not treated until the new year and even then - according to the tenants - there were only “quick fixes” to the issue.

Now Magdalena Meza Mitcher and Ben Skelton - both 23 and now living elsewhere -  have secured the compensation from their former landlord Ruth Friedman.

She had already given the tenants two months’ rent reduction at the turn of the year: the property is her only buy to let investment.

The dispute between the tenants and the landlord had already received substantial local publicity after the intervention of anti-landlord group Acorn.

The agency - Pymm & Co - had also been picketed by Acorn.

An Acorn spokesperson has told the Eastern Daily Press: "We have been able to use our collective strength to win what Magdalena and Ben deserved. The system does not work in our favour, but when we work together as a community we become too big to ignore."
