News: Bulgarian property - Greek holiday

Fri, 11 May 07

Buying property in Bulgaria can have a dual benefit for sun-loving investors...

When purchasing your apartment in the popular mountain region of Bulgaria you could be forgiven for thinking that you have signed yourself up for some great skiing, good value dining and a spot of pampering in your resident health spa... well you are, but what most people don’t know is that you are also only a couple of hours away from the glorious Greek coastline to top up those suntans too.

From Bansko the largest ski resort in Bulgaria, merely 2 ½ hours (160km) in the car will deliver you to the stunning coastal town of Kavala in Greece crossing the Bulgarian–Greek border at Kulata. Pamporovo in the Bulgarian Rhodopes Mountains is even closer, situated only 100km from the Greek coast.

It is due to the vast improvements to the Egnatia Odos motorway (E 79) following the ancient Roman road, connecting Romania, Bulgaria and Greece that this is now possible, transforming the way in which people can use their second properties.

So have the pack lunches ready and hit the roads... When approaching Kavala from the E 79, your first glimpse of the town is of a 5th Century castle set against the backdrop of the sea and harbour, luring you towards to blue waters.

Steeped in history

This ancient town is steeped in history, it is said to have been St Paul’s first port of call to preach the bible, and many buildings remain in the town leading you through its eras of change.

Today Kavala is more famous for its tobacco trading, however the old tobacco warehouses from its production days are now finding new life as shops and nightclubs. To extend your trip to Greece even further you can take the hydrofoil to the nearby island of Thassos in only half an hour.

Back in your Bulgarian apartment you can of course make the most out of the summer and winter activities available. At the Raikovski Lodge development in Pamporovo, summer activities include hiking, climbing, horse riding and mountain biking, there are also natural thermal springs for the ultimate in relaxation.

In the winter months there are of course the ski and snow board slopes to explore with the nearest ski run being just 1300 metres away.

Properties in the mountain region becoming ‘more popular’

One and two bedroom apartments are available to purchase here as well as private maisonettes. With prices starting at only £37,114 you certainly get more than you bargain for with the all-year-round activities and such close proximity to the Greek coast.

As people are starting to hear about the opportunities to travel into Greece from Bulgaria, properties in the mountain region are becoming more popular.

Visitors are certainly able to have the best of both worlds with summer sea and sun as well as winter chills on the pistes.
