News: Furnish a two bedroom home for £6K

A two bedroom £60K competition home has been fully furnished with a modern and stylish interior has using only parts that can be sourced online for just £6,000.

This £6,000 interior has been created inside the first ever £60,000 prototype home, as part of the Design for Manufacture competition, and is on display at The Building Centre in London from 15 - 27 May 2006.

The house was furnished by SIXTYK Consortium member Crest Nicholson, with the help of Roomservice Group and demonstrates that a contemporary, state-of-the-art look can still be highly affordable for those on a budget.

The concept of the SIXTYK house has been driven by the principles of affordability, energy efficiency, sustainability and high-quality design, and these qualities are borne out in the choices for the interior. The modest budget of £6,000 includes all beds and bedding, sofas, tables, chairs, lighting and lamps, as well as accessories.

Roomservice has successfully created a modern and chic look for the house using affordable furniture and accessories from a selection of national retailers including the likes of Argos and Next. The construction and furnishing of the SIXTYK house addresses a very real question and debate about how homes of the future might look.

Helen Saunders, group marketing manager of Crest Nicholson, said: "The Design for Manufacture Competition is all about driving down construction costs, but of course when you move into a house, you have to equip it to make it inhabitable."

"The interiors solution provided by Roomservice has transformed the prototype SIXTYK house into a real liveable home, while maintaining the affordability and aesthetics that are so central to the ethos of the competition."

Carolyn Sims, residential director of Roomservice Group said: "We have chosen a contemporary yet simple style for the furnishings - with many practical ideas as to how people will live in one of these houses. With just a small budget of around £6,000, we have still been able to create the important 'wow' factor for the interior."

"Given the hectic nature of modern living, everything we have selected for the house can be bought online and delivered direct to the home - meaning it is enormously convenient for anyone with a full-time job to furnish their house in this way. In addition, they can often make savings through special web only prices."
