TUI has purchased a plot of land in Tuscany for tourism development...

The 11 square kilometres is home to several old buildings, a medieval castle, a hotel, an 18-hole golf course, and agricultural areas.

It will be TUI's biggest tourism project in Tuscany and the biggest in the company's history.

"This project is a good example of our growth strategy in the hotel sector," said TUI AG chief executive Dr Michael Frenzel.

The area, called Tenuta di Castelfalfi, is located at the heart of Tuscany between Florence, Siena and Pisa in the community of Montaione.

TUI said its primary goal is not only to expand the tourism offering but also to preserve and restore the existing area under cultivation in Tuscany.

This includes also the preservation of the agriculture based on viticulture and olive farming. The existing village with a church and castle will be renovated but a spa area, various restaurants and boutiques will be added.

In addition, subject to approval by the local authorities, TUI plans to build three hotels – a Robinson club, a Dorfhotel and an Iberotel – as well as villas and apartments.
