News: Protecting your online safety

With online card-not-present fraud reaching a total of £117 million in 2004 and accounting for nearly 80% of total card-not-present fraud losses last year, the online safety message is still not getting through. However, Experian, the information solutions company, and creditexpert , its online credit monitoring and identity fraud protection service, are hoping to get the message across having detailed 13 key online safety risks to consumers in a new guide - 'Keep Safe Online'.

The guide, which can be downloaded free from www.experian.co.uk was compiled by John Walker, Head of Operational Security at Experian and covers topics such as viruses, worms, spyware, trojans and other little beasties than can easily infect your computer. And, more importantly, compromise your personal online security.

An increasing phenomenon, for example, is the 'phishing' e-mail, which is designed to look as though it comes from your bank or an on-line service provider. It may ask you to confirm your account details, such as account number and password. It will always be a fake and should never be replied to.

If you haven't been warned already Experian's guide will certainly provide food for thought.
