News: Green light for flat-pack housing estate

You can now really buy your starter home in-store at Ikea.  The first UK development for Ikea’s flat-pack homes has been given planning permission by Gateshead Council's planning and development committee.

The homes will be available through shared ownership, below-market rent and outright sale, with legal agreements discouraging buy-to-let.

And with the first 36 flats being started soon, buyers will be able to go into Ikea’s Gateshead store to buy one by the autumn. The flats are said to be space-saving and functional and within reach of households earning between £12,500 and £30,000 a year.

David Napier, Gateshead cabinet member with responsibility for housing, said: "These homes are cleverly designed, highly energy-efficient and they look fantastic, so I don't think there will be any shortage of potential buyers in Gateshead."

The homes will come with a host of additional features as standard, such as wooden flooring, fitted kitchens and free interior design advice from Ikea.

But you won’t need a large allen key or set of spanners as new homeowners are not required to assemble the houses for themselves. The BoKlok homes are being professionally assembled from factory pre made units.
