News: Five arrested in Greek rental property scam

Five people have been arrested in Greece for conning property owners out of more than 12,000 euros in management fees after promising to let out homes to tenants that never actually existed, reports www.ekathimerini.com...

Five people aged between 26 and 37 have been arrested in Greece for conning  property owners out of more than 12,000 euros in fees after promising to let out homes to tenants that never actually existed, police said last week.

The suspects ran their business from the seventh floor of a central Athens office building and charged each client 180 euros for their tenant-finding service.

The fraudsters also employed marketing material such as brochures to give prospective customers the impression that they ran a genuine company.

But police said that the suspects did not have any intention of honouring their promises.  The officers investigating believe that at least 70 property owners fell foul of the hoax but there may still be others who were also duped.
