News: Young sellers fail the 'trust test'

Wed, 01 Aug 07

Home-sellers over 50 are far more honest than younger sellers, with the 18 to 24 age group the least trustworthy overall, it has been claimed...

A new survey from Saga suggests that the 50-plus age group are least likely to lie when selling a property. The survey also revealed that more than half (55 per cent) of those aged 18 to 24 would lie in order to sell a property while 74 per cent of over 50s said they definitely would not.

In particular, a third (34 per cent) of under 50s said they would paint over a damp patch rather than investigating or fixing the problem, in a move that could spell significant financial difficulty for future occupants.

Other areas over which younger sellers are wiling to lie include parking availability and noisy neighbours.

Recent reports suggest that homeowners with four bedroom properties are prepared to lie about the number of rooms in order to avoid eligibility for a home information pack, coming into effect on August 1st for all properties of four bedrooms or more.
