News: Research 'central' to a move abroad

Fri, 11 May 07

Undertaking comprehensive research is vital for anyone consider purchasing property in Dubai or any other country, an adviser has said...

Kate Hamilton, spokesperson for property group Homes Overseas, said that there is no reason for moving from the UK to a foreign country to be any more troublesome than a move within Britain, as long as the proper preparations are made.

The first piece of advice offered by Ms Hamilton is for buyers to take independent legal advice, just as if they were moving within the UK.

Residency details of particular countries should also be checked, as some countries could have more stringent visa regulations than others.

"It is also very important to get tax advice, so you are not paying tax twice," Ms Hamilton added. "The whole point is to do research on every aspect."

The property adviser stated that it could be helpful for some buyers to rent in their country of choice beforehand to ensure that the language barrier will not be too great. Brits buying property in Dubai could avoid this problem, however, as English is widely spoken in the emirate.

Ms Hamilton added that renting could also offer a benefit in ensuring that the local infrastructure and amenities are "acceptable and workable".
