News: Clueless FTBs need to wake up

Thu, 19 Jul 07

Slack FTBs are failing to undertake event the most rudimentary checks when buying their first property...

As a result of failing to check the area they are moving to or conduct the proper structural tests, FTBs are running into problems such as noisy neighbours, structural flaws, leaky roofs and rotting windows.

New research from AA Legal Services reveals that 20% of 18 to 29-year-old homeowners did not conduct basic checks of their property before signing on the dotted line.

Noisy neighbours topped the charts as the most widespread problem, followed by structural problems, including rising damp and drainage problems.

James Molloy, head of AA Legal Services, said: "Young home buyers are now taking out mortgages which they will be paying off for the next 50 or so years so they should feel confident about the investment they are making. Simple legal and structural checks not only give peace of mind, but could also avoid costly surprises."
