News: Cheap US flights here to stay

Fri, 27 Apr 07

Flights to the US are not expected to get more expensive in coming months, despite the expected popularity boom...

It was announced this week that £1 is now worth $2 and America is expected to see an influx of British tourists eager to exploit the strength of their currency.

This development is also expected to precipitate a boom in property in Florida and other popular American destinations as real estate in the US is now effectively cheaper than it has been for some time.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents, pointed out that, as well as staying at a consistent price, flights to the US may also become less busy as fewer Americans travel to Britain owing to the weakness of their currency.

"When the dollar is very weak against the pound that impacts against Americans coming here. The UK is quite an expensive destination for them so that affects whether they choose to come over," Mr Tipton explained.

"Even if more Brits visit the US, which usually means that airports put their prices up, the Americans aren’t coming over so airlines will keep their prices at the same level. Even though there will be more people going over, prices won’t go through the roof."

Mr Tipton went on to point out that the most popular American destinations for Brits are New York, Florida and Las Vegas."
